I never got collision or comprehensive insurance on the Miata because, being a 20 year old guy I figured I’d be paying $150 per month for the peace of mind that if I ever hit something it would get fixed. After my recent collision that is going to cost me in the thousands to fix I decided to humor myself and quote comprehensive and collision so I can protect the car I have now put far, far too much money into. I currently pay $45 a month for liability. When I add comprehensive ($100 deductible) and collision ($100 deductible) it raises my monthly payments... Four dollars.

Four fucking dollars a month and I could have gotten my Miata professionally fixed for a $100 deductible. I might cry. This is idiotic.

Pic related, quite possibly.

4 bucks? That’s really surprising. AllState would would probably get out the goddamn paddle if I tried to get comprehensive on my pickup. You must have a pretty good driving record!

No tickets at all, and no at-fault collisions. Wait, no, actually there was where I was deemed “at fault” when some asshat on a Kawasaki Ninja swerved into the Civic and then whined that his blinker was on. No hand signals or anything. Bumped up my insurance on the Civic by $20 per month

Devil’s advocate: I’m guessing the amount of damage needed to total an NA Miata (yours is NA right?) would be pretty small, as far as your insurance company would be concerned; and also, it might not be worth the consequences of making a claim.

But yeah, d’oh, 20/20, and all that.

It’s life. I was once ran off the freeway by a non-signaling Range Rover. They fled and the cop told me it was my fault. Good old WSP

They might have totaled the Miata if the insurance is cheap, usually the value of the car is low. That’s how it is for my 1990 Isuzu pickup. One collision repair costs >$2,000 they totaled it, deduceted it’s market value and let me keep it while writting me a check for $750.

That was one of the most infuriating instances in my life. I had two passengers in the car but their words meant nothing because they were biased.

How would that work if the car already has a rebuilt salvage title? They total it... again?

Exactly. I have worked a couple of claims where this has happened. Person has a car with a salvage title, involved in a loss, vehicle is considered a total loss again. It happens more than you may think.

Yeah good point. When I lost my vehicle, they managed to claim it was worth about half of the market value somehow... When you buy a car, the DMV declares the biggest value so they fuck you on tax on the purchase. When you total it, the insurance company undercuts the value so they can pay you out the smallest amount or to avoid a costly repair. It’s a fucking joke.

I have no idea, that is what happened to me. The Isuzu didn’t start with a salvage title. I would imagine they would just undervalue the car more so you get less when it is totaled. Edit from above they deducted salvage value from market value.

So how do you get it back on the road? Does the DMV consider it un-drivable until you prove it’s been fixed?

The thing to be careful of with older cars is that the coverage is so cheap because the insurer is hoping that the damage is severe enough to be a write-off. In most cases, prepare to be underwhelmed by the offer following a total loss, especially for an older vehicle like this.

Generally, the older the car is the less collision/comprehensive impact insurance premiums. If you contrasted your NA with a brand new ND, I’m sure it’d be a noticeable different in premium (which makes sense).

Anytime you put insurance on a car, it’s a good idea to get a quote for liability only and a second quote with physical coverages included.

I had allstate for 8 years, one claim on a no fault accident for about $1,800 and they increased my rates by 30%. Went shopping and found much better rates and coverage from others in about 10 minutes (progressive). Progressive has been great so far, several windshields and no issues at all.

In WA, you can have your car totaled and buy it back from your insurer for peanuts with a branded title (or possibly a lein? I’m not too good with laws). To make it road legal again, you have make repairs on your dime and have the car inspected by the state patrol to get a new, rebuilt (branded, but legal) title.

There are apparently laws about what you can or cannot rebuild depending on whatever your state says.

Kinja'd!!!

So hypothetically if your Miata was declared totaled here in WA, and you wanted to bebuild it, apparently, you couldn’t, because it’s over 20 years old :/ YMMV

Aside from the value, the age plays a factor too. The way my company looks at it, if the cost of repair is more than half of what the car is worth, we will just go ahead and total it. If I have a claim where the vehicle is 7 years old or older, I just go ahead and tell them there is a potential for it being a total unless it is something special that has retained it’s value pretty well over the years.

Insurance makes no sense. My wife had a spotless record and Progressive was giving her the business, refusing to drop her rates, which came to to $100 for minimum liability only (!!!), so I switched her to Geico for 1/3 of the cost...

We moved to Allstate last year because we bundled with out HOI, and the rates are definitely more but not unfair...

For the state of Mississippi, you have to have documentation for everything. You would need pictures of the vehicle before and after the repairs, all invoices, receipts, etc from the repairs made, and the dmv will do a free inspection to confirm if the vehicle is deemed roadworthy. Once it is, the car an be registered to drive again. If the car has a title in good standing and there are less than 6 (if I remember right) components that needed replacing, then the title can remain the same. Any more than that and the title would have to be rebranded as a salvage. If the vehicle has been a total before, then the process is still the same, but it would need to be disclosed that the vehicle was a total before.

It’s honestly a bit of a pain, but some people don’t mind, especially if the car is paid off and they can do most of the work themselves. However, one thing to consider is if the vehicle still has a loan on it and the payoff is greater than the settlement amount, the leinholder may not let you keep the vehicle because they don’t want to be stuck having a vehicle with a salvage title if for whatever reason the car was repossessed.

How old was the Miata? If it’s old you probably would have still been on the hook for thousands as they would just write you a check for like $2000 and send you on your way.

Liability insurance is now costlier than comprehensive/collision due to the high cost of medical etc. This is a reversal from 30 years ago.
